Tom Maakestad: Altered Perspective

Painting demonstration Saturday: Widely acclaimed for his lush landscapes of southern Minnesota, Marine on St. Croix painter Tom Maakestad made a dramatic turn in his current show, inspired by aerial views of rural topography. A frequent international flier through his work in printing and publishing, Maakestad became fascinated by the visual interplay of urban grids and the natural undulations of rivers and valleys visible from the air. His new "Altered Perspective" paintings incorporate these contrasts via tilted, map-like perspectives, abstracted topography and a palette dominated by wintry taupe and blue rather than the summery greens and harvest tones for which he is best known. Maakestad will discuss his work during a painting demonstration from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday. (Exhibit hours: noon-5 p.m. Tue.-Sat. Free. Groveland Gallery, 25 Groveland Terrace, Mpls. Ends Oct. 19. 612-377-3800 or www.grovelandgallery.com)
