Bogs, white nights, slow-grow vegetation and big empty spaces. Those are the charms of the northern latitudes that photographer Justin Newhall documented on an 11,000-mile rail journey through northern Canada. Inspired by "The Idea of the North," a 1967 radio documentary by pianist Glenn Gould, Newhall explored the western shore of Hudson Bay, where he found landscapes as singular and solitary as "Spruce (No. 5)," seen here. Newhall will discuss it all in a Dec. 11 dialogue with Bartholomew Ryan, a Walker Art Center assistant curator. (2 p.m. Dec. 11, free. Show ends Jan 22. Franklin Art Works, 1021 E. Franklin Av., Mpls. 612-872-7494 or www.franklinartworks.org)
