Vital statistics: India's Agni 5 weighs about 50 tons and is 51 feet long. It can carry a 1.5-metric ton warhead and will be ready for operational use by 2014, the Indian government said.

Its range: The missile has a range of about 3,100 miles, meaning it can reach Shanghai and Beijing, China; Tehran, Iran, parts of eastern Europe, and Manila, Philippines.

The regional rivalry: China has a missile that can hit targets at least 6,200 miles away, and Pakistan's missile range is at least 744 miles.
