Three Minnesota companies — one each in insurance, health care and packaged food — have been named to Fortune magazine's annual list of top 100 workplaces.

Allianz Life Insurance of North America placed 47th; Mayo Clinic was ranked 53rd; and General Mills came in 64th, according to the list released Thursday.

Google Inc., based in Mountain View, Calif., was ranked first for the third consecutive year.

To pick the nation's best companies to work for, Fortune partners with the Great Place to Work Institute, a San Francisco firm that conducts the study. Any company that is at least five years old and has 1,000 U.S. employees is eligible.

Allianz, based in Golden Valley, rose in this year's rankings from 59th in 2013. Rochester-based Mayo Clinic declined from 41st last year.

Golden Valley-based General Mills was absent from last year's list, saying it didn't participate. General Mills had been on the list five straight years before 2013.

For this year's Fortune ranking, 257 firms participated, and more than 252,000 employees were surveyed.
