Cheryl Reeve usually dislikes making mid-season personnel changes. But, the Lynx coach said, something had to be done. So the team Tuesday signed second-year point guard Nadirah McKenith and waived second-year guard Lindsay Moore, the team's first-round draft choice in 2013 (12th overall).
"We were looking for some help at the point guard spot," Reeve said. "We need something to jump-start our second team."
The Lynx want Monica Wright, who is coming back from knee surgery, to focus mainly on the off-guard position while she returns to 100 percent. And Moore, according to Reeve, was not as assertive offensively as the Lynx wanted. The Lynx are the second-highest scoring team in the WNBA, but it's bench production (12.7 points per game) is last in the 12-team league.
McKenith practiced with the team Tuesday.
A second-round pick by Washington last season out of St. John's, the 5-7 McKenith averaged 2.8 points and 1.0 assists in 8.8 minutes per game as a rookie. In one-plus seasons Moore averaged 1.0 points and 1.1 assists over 35 games.
• Lynx forward Maya Moore is first among frontcourt players in the Western Conference in All-Star voting. Teammates Seimone Augustus and Lindsay Whalen are second and third — behind Phoenix's Diana Taurasi — in guard voting.
Lineman commits to U
The Gophers football program landed its fifth recruit for the 2015 class Tuesday when Red Wing lineman Nick Connelly gave a verbal commitment during an unofficial recruiting visit.
The 6-6, 270-pound Connelly plays offensive tackle and defensive end and is a consensus three-star recruit. He had reported offers from Wyoming, Illinois State and Montana State.
