Education: Graduated from UCLA in 1981 with bachelor's degree in political science; also attended the school's Anderson Graduate School of Management.

Board service: Currently, a member of the board of directors at Polaris Industries and the YMCA of Greater New York; previously served on the boards of Centerplate, Home Depot, Office Max and Kirin-Tropicana Inc.

Awards: Grocery Headquarters magazine Retailer of the Year in 2006; Supermarket News Marketer of the Year in 2005.
