CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY Cyclists climbed Chilkoot Hill during the North Star Grand Prix on Sunday in Stillwater. The criterium was the sixth and final stage of the event, and it was won by Dylan Sunderland (NSW Institute of Sport), right, of Australia. The overall men’s pro winner was Colin Joyce (Rally Cycling) of Pocatello, Idaho. The women’s winner was Emma White (Rally Cycling) of Delanson, N.Y. “We got the yellow jersey on the second stage, and were able to defend it all week,” said the 19-year-old White. The women’s criterium winner was Marlies Mejías (Weber Shimano). (The Minnesota Star Tribune)

Hay Dakota closed from midpack to win by a neck in the Mystic Lake Mile, one of two $100,000 races on Sunday at Canterbury Park.

The 4-year-old gelding, with Denny Velazquez aboard, made a sweeping outside move on the far turn of the turf race and passed Majestic Pride for the victory. Hay Dakota returned $15.80 to win the day's eighth race. Way Striking was third.

In the seventh race, Sweet Tapper, with Orlando Mojica aboard, won the Lady Canterbury Stakes by a head over favorite Insta Erma.

"I was waiting, waiting, waiting, and finally got through," Mojica said.

Sweet Tapper paid $18 to win in the 1-mile turf stakes.

The fifth race was ruled a no contest after a horse ran loose. Tiz a Princess broke through the rail at the start and dropped jockey Patrick Canchari. It ran through the infield, and when the field entered the far turn, it jumped the rail into the oncoming riders. No one was injured.

Saints beat Goldeyes

The St. Paul Saints defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 7-6 to take two of three games in the road series.

The Saints (19-10) increased their lead in the American Association's North Division to two games over the Goldeyes.

Winnipeg tied the score at 6-6 with a four-run fifth inning, but the Saints went back on top in the sixth on Tony Thomas' sacrifice fly. The Saints bullpen finished the game by recording four shutout innings.

Christensen wins

Michael Christensen of Bunker Hills defeated Trent Peterson of Valleywood in a playoff to win the MPGA Mid Public Links tournament at St. Paul's Highland National Golf Club.

Christensen, who was tied with Peterson at 4-under 140 after 36 holes, birdied the first extra hole. Peterson made par.
