CANNES, FRANCE - Michael Haneke won the Cannes Film Festival's top prize for a second time with his stark film about love and death, "Amour."
The Austrian director's powerful film stars two French acting icons -- Emmanuelle Riva, 85, and Jean-Louis Trintignant, 81 -- as an elderly couple coping with the wife's worsening health. Haneke previously won the Palme in 2009 for "The White Ribbon."
Also Sunday, the festival jury awarded the second-place Grand Prize to Matteo Garrone's Italian satire "Reality," while Ken Loach's whiskey-tasting comedy "The Angels' Share" won the third-place Jury Prize.
Carlos Reygadas was named best director for his surrealism-tinged story of a Mexican family, "Post Tenebras Lux." Best actor went to Mads Mikkelsen as a man ostracized by his small town when he is accused of child abuse in "The Hunt."
Best actress was won jointly by Cristina Flutur and Cosmina Stratan for the Romanian movie "Beyond the Hills." Cristian Mungiu's drama of love and faith in a remote monastery also won the award for best screenplay. The festival on the French Riviera ended Sunday.
Swedish songstress wins Eurovision The singing grannies who hail from central Russia have captured plenty of hearts but couldn't quite win the Eurovision Song Contest, held Saturday in Azerbaijan. They came in a distant second to Sweden's Loreen and her song "Euphoria." The contest is an annual evening devoted to pop music, in all its excess. The six Russian grannies -- the Buranovskiye Babushki - appeared in traditional costumes and went through a routine of baking while singing.
