Bethel University has surpassed the goal of its most-ambitious fundraising campaign ever, pulling in $109.3 million.
The Christian university had hoped to raise $105 million over six years to be used for new facilities.
The major project is a 110,000-square-foot commons building on its Arden Hills campus that leaders describe as "a family room" for the school's community. On the shores of Lake Valentine, it's set to be completed in spring 2009.
The Bethel Seminary campus in San Diego will also be expanded.
Money also will go toward scholarships and academic programs.
There were 32 commitments of $1 million or more, including two for $5 million, said president George Brushaber, who will retire at the end of the month. The commons building will be named after him.
Bethel has about 6,200 students in its various programs.
