Bratz lawsuit in fashion

June 6, 2008 at 4:52AM

RIVERSIDE, CALIF. - The head of the toy company that produces the Bratz fashion doll has testified that the designer who came up with the idea has made $30 million in royalties over the past seven years.

MGA Entertainment Inc. chief executive Isaac Larian took the stand Thursday in Riverside federal court, where Mattel Inc. and MGA are battling over the Bratz line.

Larian told jurors that he met with designer Carter Bryant in September 2000 and discussed the Bratz design. Larian said Bryant's drawings became the inspiration for the urban-themed dolls, but it was the financial backing of MGA that made Bratz a reality.

Mattel sued MGA, claiming it owns the Bratz rights because Bryant created the concept while employed at Mattel. MGA has countersued.
