Last week the hosts of MyTalk107.1FM's afternoon drive show announced the death of adored Mouseketeer Annette Funicello — more than 18 months late.
C.J.: The belated obituary, a schtick that may not die around MyTalkFM107.1
Funicello's April 8, 2013, death is not funny, but this "Lori & Julia Show" gaffe is hilarious. Their colleagues are not about to forget it, as the male half of the station's "Colleen & Bradley Show" told me.
"I've been going up to Lori and Julia and trying to get them to think that other celebrities are dead," Bradley Traynor said with a smile. "They did it to themselves."
Boy, did they. This was monumental even for Lori & Julia, who've made being under-informed part of their shtick. Lori Barghini opened the show with a kind of breathy, breaking-news announcement of "a notable obituary. Boys and girls, ladies and gentlemen, some people won't know who this is, but many people will: Annette Funicello has passed away at the age of 70."
Thus began Funicello remembrances with Lori stressing that Walt Disney Co. had confirmed the death while Britney Spears, another former Mouseketeer, "weighed in." They recalled Frankie Avalon and the "Beach Blanket Bingo" movie. The impact of Annette's movies on Lori's dad was discussed. The most useful part was their information about MS, the disease that crippled Funicello. Julia Cobbs shared an acquaintance's description of what the disease feels like in earlier stages. Funicello's passing was celebrated until about the 7:01 mark in the show's first hour. Then Donny Love, producer and normally the brains of the show, said, "I have to stop you. We are collectively idiots. I don't know how we made this mistake. I blew it. I admit it, I may be the biggest idiot of all, but she died last year."
Julia: "Oh, for God's sake. Did someone spoof us?"
Donny remarked on air: "Oh, we got e-mails calling us complete morons."
You have to go listen to this one on demand at mytalk1071.com. It's funny every time. Stay with it as they bring out a bus and start running over each other. They apologized to Funicello's family.
"You can't make this up," read an e-mail from program director Amy Daniels, who was trying to find out if this gaffe had attracted as much downloading from the station's website as I've heard.
Julia is sure to be ribbed Wednesday at the "Celebrity Lip Sync" for Smile Network benefit at Muse where she's taking on Gwen Stefani's "Wind It Up."
A medley of Funicello's hits would be better.
Black-ish
Based on the promos, producers of ABC's "Black-ish" think it's now safe to air the "spanking episode" pulled a few weeks ago due to Adrian Peterson's arrest on child abuse charges.
The show is scheduled to air Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. on KSTP-TV. The promo suggests that the dad played by Anthony Anderson ultimately rejects this method of discipline. Blogger Monique Jones reports the episode makes mention of Dre, Anderson's character, getting a spanking WHEN HE WAS IN COLLEGE from his dad, Pops, played by Laurence Fishburne.
In other Peterson news, add former Vikings QB Fran Tarkenton and Detroit sportswriter Mitch Albom to the bandwagon speculating that Peterson won't play again for the Vikings. Both also seemed astonished that Peterson couldn't eschew pot smoking in the days before his Texas court appearance.
Speaking to KFAN's Dan Barreiro, Tarkenton said, "Bad news does not get better with age. … He's loved in Minnesota. He's a terrific football player, seems to be a humble, nice guy. But we're seeing things that are going on and we're learning more every day; just falling on us about the behavior of Adrian and so forth with multiple children and now admitting supposedly that he had smoked a little weed. These signs were there and we might as well recognize the signs."
On ESPN's "Sports Reporters," Albom said, "Once again we ask, what was Peterson thinking? We asked that when he staunchly defended his style of parental discipline, despite photos of a bruised and cut 4-year-old. We ask it now. With the expensive and loquacious lawyers he's hired, couldn't one of them advise him to lay off the dope?"
