My great grandfather, Gustave Reinhold Jacobi, had this cottage built in Bemidji in 1904. It was the first cabin on Birchmont Beach, on the north coast of Lake Bemidji next to the Ruttgers' Birchmont Lodge. The family named the cabin "Eagles Nest."

My great grandfather was a Grand Forks, N.D., banker, had six kids, and according to relatives wanted to get them out of Grand Forks so they wouldn't get in trouble. One of those children was my grandfather, Reinhold; another was Geraldine, who gave birth to the actress Jane Russell in the Bemidji hospital in 1921.

The cottage was sold in 1926 during the recession and was out of the family until 1979, when my father was able to buy it back. My father had an eagle carved, a sentinel watching over this family cabin.

My two sons currently own the cabin, and it is in need of some updating. However, it is a family gathering place filled with history, memories and wonderful times.
