Age: 20
Cash check: Dan Weyandt
Home: Minneapolis
Annual earnings: About $10,000
Education: A junior majoring in physics at the University of Minnesota
Job: Server at Tuggs Tavern
Living Arrangements: There's 15 people that live here (fraternity Delta Kappa Epsilon), and I have my own room. It's fun, it's a nice social environment to live in. Sometimes it's a little loud.
What would your dream job be? To do nothing.
Last major purchase? I bought a basketball hoop, (for the house's back yard) two days ago. ($200)
Next major purchase? We're going to have a formal next Friday. We're getting a ballroom, there's a dinner, water park, hotel room ... just for fun. (About $200)
Smart money advice: Don't spend your money. Don't use credit cards in college unless you absolutely have to. Spend what you have; don't spend more than that.
Stupid money: I'm really impulsive. I see the numbers in the account, and I just want to go get something. I bought a rabbit, "Sly," when I went to the mall to go to Plato's Closet (a consignment shop) and save some money. When I lived at home I would buy stupid stuff off the Internet, like a grappling hook (the kind Batman uses).
Thrifty tricks: Buy clothes when they're not in season. Buy pants in the summer and shorts in the winter.
Best career advice you've received? How to present your résumé like you have skills. You can be involved in a bunch of activities, but if you don't know what you learned from it, you're not going to benefit from it. (Advice from his fraternity career mentor.)
Financial goal: My idea of success is to raise a family that I can support. I don't care about being real wealthy or anything, but I want enough so that we feel like there's security.
If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money? I'd give a lot to charity. I'd pay off my parents' mortgage. I'd pay my school loans off and pay my way thorough the rest of school, buy a bunch of my friends cool (stuff).
What's the biggest misconception about frat guys you want to clear up? Everyone assumes that we're different than everyone else. We're exactly like everyone else but we're just more organized.
