Chart: Meet the newest Twins
DARIN MASTROIANNI, OF
Age: 26 (born Aug. 26, 1985) • Bats/throws: R/R
How acquired: Claimed off waivers Feb. 2.
Best year: Batted .301 and stole 46 bases for Class AA New Hampshire in 2010.
Scouting report: He has plenty of speed, once stealing 70 bases in a minor league season, but doesn't hit for power. Can play all three outfield positions and played some second base at Class AAA Rochester, where he hit .346 in 20 games and credited hitting coach Tom Brunansky for adjusting his swing.
P.J. WALTERS, P
Age: 27 (born March 12, 1985) • Bats/throws: R/R
How acquired: Signed as a free agent on Dec. 12.
Best year: Went 8-5 with a 3.81 ERA for Class AAA Memphis of the Cardinals chain in 2010.
Scouting report: His fastball is 88-89 miles per hour and he mixes in a cut fastball, slider, curve and changeup. Walters said his success at Rochester, where he went 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA, came from getting ahead in the count. He is 2-0 with a 7.24 ERA in 51 major league innings.
