Minnesota Vikings special teams coordinator Mike Priefer speaks to reporters following practice at NFL football training camp in Mankato, Minn. Former Minnesota punter Chris Kluwe says Priefer made anti-gay comments while Kluwe was with the Vikings. Kluwe wrote a scathing article on the website Deadspin on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014. In it, he alleges that Priefer made several anti-gay comments in objection to Kluwe's outspoken support of a gay marriage amendment in Minnesota. Kluwe also said coach Leslie Frazier and general manager Rick Spielman encouraged him to tone down his public rhetoric on gay marriage and several other issues. Kluwe was cut last summer and did not play in the NFL this season. The Vikings issued a statement saying they take the allegations seriously. As you probably know by now, former Vikings punter Chris Kluwe went full-frontal on the Vikings last week -- accusing special teams coach Mike Priefer of being a "bigot" and implicating Leslie Frazier and Rick Spielman by association. He charged that Priefer made anti-gay slurs in the locker room, and in his initial post at Deadspin, Kluwe wrote:

If there's one thing I hope to achieve from sharing this story, it's to make sure that Mike Priefer never holds a coaching position again in the NFL, and ideally never coaches at any level.

Since then, the Vikings have hired attorneys to conduct an investigation of the allegation and Kluwe, too, has retained legal counsel.

Interestingly, in a Tuesday appearance on Fox Sports Live, Kluwe retreated from his original stance on Priefer. While not backing down from what he alleged, Kluwe said, "After thinking about it, after reflecting on it, I don't think an appropriate punishment is if he never coaches again. I think it would be better if he got therapy, if he got counseling, and then a year or two from now, come back into the league as a role model, help out with LGBT groups, and show people that this is an important issue."

Those are two very different things, of course -- Kluwe's desire in the Deadspin post vs. what he said Tuesday -- and we're not entirely sure the rabbit can be stuffed back in the hat. That said, the larger issue in play remains whether Priefer said what Kluwe alleges. And that is still playing out.
