Classes canceled at Savage school after fire

Students at a Savage elementary school will not attend class on Tuesday after a small bathroom fire led to the building's evacuation on Monday.

The fire was reported about 10:30 a.m. at Harriet Bishop Elementary, according to Ruth Dunn, spokeswoman for the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District.

Authorities believe that someone set fire to a roll of toilet paper on a dispenser in a boys' bathroom, said Savage police Capt. David Muelken. "We're investigating it as an arson," he said.

Students and staff members were moved to the fire station across the street, and parents were allowed to pick up their children there, Dunn said. No injuries were reported.

School was canceled Tuesday at Harriet Bishop so workers could clean up smoke damage to the building, Dunn said. The fire did not cause any structural damage, she added. The school is located at 14400 O'Connell Road.
