Discus thrower Shelby Frank and hammer thrower Kostas Zaltos of the Gophers win Big Ten awards

Both had the third-longest throws in their event in the nation this season in the Arizona State Invitational.

Gophers sophomore Shelby Frank and redshirt sophomore Kostas Zaltos were named Big Ten field athletes of the week for their performances at the Arizona State Invitational in Tempe.

Frank won the women's discus with a toss of 188 feet — third best in the nation. Zaltos was second in the the hammer throw (232-9). That's also the third farthest by a college athlete this year.

Augustana sophomore catcher Drey Dirksen was named the Division II national hitter of the week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The 6-4, 215-pound Willmar High graduate went 9-for-16 in five games. He had six homers, 17 RBI and a 1.688 slugging percentage.

Michigan State goalie Drew DeRidder will transfer to North Dakota for his fifth year of collegiate hockey and will be immediately eligible, UND announced. He started 70 games for the Spartans and this past season had a 2.94 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage in 25 starts.
