The harvest moon will rise on Tuesday evening.

By Todd Nelson, filling in for Douglas:

There have been plenty of songs written about the moon. Some notable artists include Frank Sinatra, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and Creedence Clearwater Revival, to name a few. However, one of the best has to from Neil Young. IYKYK, as the kids say.

At 7:18 p.m. Tuesday, the harvest moon will rise in the east sky. The harvest moon is the full moon closest to the fall equinox, which falls on Sunday, Sept. 22 this year. Most years, the harvest moon occurs in September, but about every four or five years, it doesn’t come until October, as will be the case in 2025 (Oct. 6). Farmers used the extra light in the evening to collect crops from their fields, thus the “harvest moon.”

Warm, summerlike weather will continue through the week, with a string of 80s likely through Friday. A large trough of low pressure in the western United States will slowly slide our way, bringing rain and thunder chances to the area late in the week. It appears that we’ll see our best chance of potentially soaking rains this weekend and especially on Sunday. We could use some rain, for sure!
