Farmington authorities identified Mark J. Holton as the driver who was hit from behind and killed about two blocks from his home as he waited to turn left from southbound Pilot Knob Road onto eastbound 206th Street.

The other driver, Jacob J. Askew, 29, of Farmington, hit Holton's vehicle about 11:35 a.m. Wednesday, Farmington police said. He was not injured.

"Motor vehicle crashes are almost always preventable," Farmington Police Chief Gary Rutherford said in a statement. "This was a tragic result, and our thoughts are with Mr. Holton's family and friends during this difficult time."

Police have yet to say why Askew failed to avoid hitting the SUV driven by Holton, who was 65. The investigation continues.

Askew's driving record includes five speeding tickets in the past six years and a drunken driving conviction, according to court records.
