August 31, 2015 at 12:41PM

A late-night collision at a rural western Minnesota intersection killed one of the drivers and injured eight other people, authorities said Sunday.

The crash involving a car and a minivan occurred shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Hwy. 12 and County Road 7 in Mamre Township, about 10 miles west of Willmar, according to the State Patrol.

The car was heading south on County Road 7, when it was broadsided by the westbound minivan on Hwy. 12, the patrol said. While authorities have not explained the circumstances leading up to the crash, the car has a stop sign to observe, and the minivan does not.

The car's driver, Marcus U. Hahn, 55, of Venice, Calif., was killed, the patrol said.

His wife, Maria Vlachou-Hahn, 46, and child Eva were hospitalized with noncritical injuries, the patrol added.

Five people in the minivan also suffered noncritical injuries. The patrol identified them as driver Diego Velazquez Sanchez, 31, of Kerkhoven, Minn.; and passengers Jose R. Cabrera Ortega, 33, of Clara City, Minn.; Sergio A Delgado, 26; Martha C. Lopez, 26; Dante L. Velazquez, a child not yet a year old; and Paulina Lopez, 6.
