Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif.) won his 25th national title and Laura Wilkinson (Spring, Texas) won her 19th, as the two Olympians finished atop the standings Saturday at the Speedo USA Diving Spring National Championships at the University of Minnesota.
Dumais gets 25th diving title
Wilkinson scored 391.50 points for the women's 10-meter title, and Dumais took the men's 3-meter title with 476.75 points. Wilkinson, who was fourth in Thursday's semifinals, turned in a consistent effort and hit some dives that had given her trouble this year.
"I've had some difficulties, but I feel like I'm on track for the summer," Wilkinson said.
Haley Ishimatsu (Seal Beach, Calif.), last year's champion, was second with 372.05 points, and Brittany Viola (Orlando) was third at 360.45. Michelle Cabassol (Montgomery, Texas) took fourth, at 342.55.
Gophers track Sophomore Aaron Studt won the shot put and hammer at the Carleton Relays on Saturday in Northfield, Minn. One day after winning the shot put title at the Tommie Twilight in St. Paul with a career-best toss of 62 feet, 7 1/2 inches, Studt had a winning 60-10 1/2. Studt also captured the title in the hammer, with a heave of 176-3.
Sayfe Jassim added a victory in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 22.58 seconds. He was also second in the 100 meters, at 11.13 seconds.
Mike Torchia and Forest Tahdooahnippah recorded top-five finishes in the 1,500-meter run. Torchia was third at 3:56.63, and Tahdooahnippah was fourth (3:58.75).
Etc. Illinois beat the Gophers softball team 10-2 Saturday in Champaign, Ill. The Illini (25-24, 4-8 Big Ten) broke the game open with six runs in the second.
Illinois swept a doubleheader from the Gophers baseball team at Siebert Field on Saturday, 15-2 and 7-3. Minnesota (15-19, 5-8) was led by Nate Hanson (2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base). Jeff DeSmidt went 1-for-3 with a homer, a run and an RBI. In the second game, Illinois built a 4-0 lead, but the Gophers pulled within 4-3 in the fifth inning. The Illini responded with three runs in the sixth.
The Gophers rowing team played host to Louisville, Michigan and Michigan State on the Mississippi River on Saturday. The First Varsity Eight fell to No. 7 Michigan State and No. 9 Michigan. The Gophers fell to Michigan State and MSU in the Second Varsity Eight.
