Eastbound Interstate 94 reopened about 9 p.m. Monday following a fatal accident during the afternoon rush that led to massive traffic delays.
Eastbound I-94 reopens after fatal crash
The Minnesota Department of Transportation closed eastbound I-94 at Hwy. 280 following a crash about 5:51 p.m. A woman was traveling west on I-94 in a Chevy Blazer when she crossed the median and struck a Volvo station wagon heading east on I-94. The Volvo was pushed into the side of a Metro Transit bus driving eastbound — shattering some windows on the bus.
The man driving the Volvo died at the scene from the head-on collision, according to State Patrol Lt. Tiffani Nielson. The woman was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. She is in critical condition. Four of the 25 Metro Transit bus riders were transported to Regions Hospital. During the three-hour freeway closure following the crash, MnDOT diverted drivers to northbound Interstate 35W.
