Ex-Gopher Alec Ortiz wins Greco-Roman national title

Former Gopher Alec Ortiz, representing the Minnesota Storm, won his first Greco-Roman national title with a 2-1 victory against Storm teammate Ryan Epps in the 77 kg final at the United World Wrestling Senior Nationals over the weekend in Coralville, Iowa.

The top five finishers at each weight class in the senior division qualify for the 2021 World Team Trials in September.

In the freestyle division, two-time All-America Brayton Lee, a redshirt sophomore, and Gophers alum Devin Skatzka placed third in 70 kg and 79 kg, respectively.

U golfers place ninth

The Gophers men's golf team recorded its lowest round on the final day to finish in ninth place (294-914) at the Big Ten Championship at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind. Illinois claimed the team crown for the sixth year in a row with a 19-over 883.

Senior Angus Flanagan, the 2019 co-medalist, tied for 13th to lead Minnesota. He closed with a 1-over 73 for a 225 total.

St. John's golfers win

St. John's shattered the 54-hole record at the MIAC Championships at Emerald Greens Golf Course in Hastings with a score of 850 (284-281-285) — besting the previous low by 27 shots — to win the program's 13th conference title. St. Thomas placed second (864 total).

St. John's Thomas Gutzmer and St. Thomas' Matt Armstrong carded 208s to tie for first place.

Hamline advances

The Hamline women's lacrosse team defeated Northwestern (St. Paul) 14-5 at home on Saturday in the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference championship game to win its fourth straight playoff title. Ashley Hessler had three goals and three assists and Alyssa Bryan-Jeffries 14 saves for Hamline (8-4).

U's losing streak at 13

Boston Merila hit a solo homer and Ronald Sweeny a two-run shot, but the Gophers baseball team lost 6-3 to Maryland in College Park, Md. The loss was the 13th in a row for Minnesota (4-26 overall/conference).
