Facial-recognition technology has linked a fatal Minneapolis shooting two weeks ago to a gang-affiliated felon who likely hopped a plane for Georgia the next day, according to newly filed court records.

Abdifatah Ibrahim Mohamed, 22, of St. Paul, was found June 27 on the street near 9th Street and 23rd Avenue S. shot in the head. He and the suspect fought outside before the adversary retrieved a gun from his car and shot Mohamed.

Mohamed died at HCMC early the next day.

Video recovered from two buildings nearby show the gunman shooting at Mohamed, according to search warrant affidavits in the case that police filed seeking data from the suspect's cellphones and social media accounts.

Informants told police the name of the suspect's Instagram account. A photo from that account was run though a facial-recognition program, revealing the identity of a 28-year-old Minneapolis man police now believe killed Mohamed, the court filings read.

The filings also describe the suspect as a longtime drug dealer who is a member of 6 Rings.

His criminal history in Minnesota includes convictions for credit/debit card fraud, drug possession, drunken driving, fleeing police and loitering.
