Former Green Bay Packers receiver Jordy Nelson announced Wednesday he is retiring from the NFL after 11 seasons.
A second-round pick out of Kansas State in 2008, Nelson played with Green Bay from 2008-17. He ranks second in franchise history in touchdown receptions (69), third in receptions (550), third in 100-yard receiving games (25) and fifth in receiving yards (7,848).
Nelson played last year with the Raiders, catching 63 passes for 739 yards and three touchdowns.
PI reviewable
NFL owners at their annual meeting passed by a 31-1 margin a proposal that interference can be challenged by coaches and reviewed by officials next season.
Owners voted on a one-year trial basis to include those often-controversial penalties in the officiating replay review system. Coaches still will have two challenges per game, and in the final two minutes of a half or fourth quarter or for all of overtime, the replay official can order a review of offensive or defensive pass interference.
The change stems from an egregious missed call in the NFC Championship Game that likely led to the Rams making the Super Bowl and the Saints falling short.
Etc.
• The Buccaneers signed Jaguars former first-round draft pick Blaine Gabbert to be a backup quarterback..
• The Cowboys signed safety George Iloka, who played last year with the Vikings.
