61 gives Weir Deutsche Bank lead Mike Weir birdied the first four holes and one-putted his final nine greens in the Deutsche Bank Championship to tie the course record with a 10-under-par 61 at TPC Boston at Norton, Mass.
The lowest round of his PGA Tour career gave Weir a three-shot lead over a group of four players that included Vijay Singh, who last week won The Barclays.
Singh previously had the TPC Boston course record to himself, a 61 in the third round two years ago. .
John Merrick, Heath Slocum and Briny Baird joined Singh at 64, while Ben Curtis had a 65. Ernie Els and Jim Furyk were in a large group another stroke back. Phil Mickelson shot a 69.
• Hale Irwin, Chip Beck, Fuzzy Zoeller, Loren Roberts and Andy Bean shot 6-under 66s to share the first-round lead in the WalMart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach (Calif). Fred Funk, Phil Blackmar and Steve Thomas were one shot back. Play at the Pebble Beach course had to be suspended because of fog.

Knicks get Ewing The New York Knicks acquired Patrick Ewing Jr. from the Houston Rockets in exchange for the draft rights to center Frederic Weis.
Ewing joins the team with which his father, Patrick Ewing, starred for 15 of his 17 NBA seasons.
• San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili, who helped lead Argentina to a bronze medal in the Beijing Olympics, will have surgery next week to repair a ligament injury in his left ankle. It was not known how long he will be sidelined.
• Former Seattle SuperSonics owner Howard Schultz is dropping his lawsuit against new team owner Clay Bennett, ending an attempt to regain the team from its new home in Oklahoma City.

Sun whips Dream Tamika Whitmore scored 27 points and Asjha Jones 24 as the Connecticut Sun gained a 98-72 victory against the Atlanta Dream. Lindsay Whalen had five points and eight assists for the Sun. ... Jia Perkins scored 22 points as the Chicago Sky beat the Washington Mystics 79-75. ... The Detroit Shock beat the New York Liberty 83-69 as Deanna Nolan scored 24 points on 10-for-15 shooting. Janel McCarville led New York with 21 points and Shameka Christon added 16.

Soccer: Zenit St. Petersburg won the European Super Cup for the first time, upsetting Manchester United 2-1 at Monte Carlo, Monaco, on goals by Pavel Pogrebnyak and Danny.
