A Fridley police officer suffered minor injuries Friday when his squad car was hit broadside by another motorist and flipped upside down.

The officer was trying to stop another driver who ran a red light at University Avenue NE. and Mississippi Street when he was hit about 8:10 a.m. The impact caused the officer's 2015 Ford Utility to overturn and land on its roof.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was headed south on University Avenue when he spotted the motorist, who had disobeyed the traffic signal. He activated his lights and went to pull the car over. As he entered the intersection, he was struck by a teenage driver heading east on Mississippi Street, said Lt. Ryan George of the Fridley Police Department.

A passenger in the vehicle that hit the squad and the officer were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the vehicle was not hurt.

Police did not catch the motorist who ran the red light.
