From geocaching to hikes, Minnesota parks ablaze with fall-related activities

Get a great vantage point for fall color at fire tower near Whitewater park.

Fire tower story

Whitewater State Park, 10 a.m.-noon Saturday

Take in the beauty of the hardwood forests in fall while learning about the unique history of the Elba Fire Tower. Meet at the park visitor center. It is 700-plus steps up the bluff and to the top of the tower. Don't forget comfortable shoes and a camera. (1-507-932-3007, mndnr.gov)

Geocaching 101

William O'Brien State Park, 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday

Learn how to use a global positioning device and then go find hidden caches. A limited number of GPS units will be available. Reservations requested; call 651-433-0500.

Fall photography

Glacial Lakes State Park, 10 a.m.-noon Saturday

Head through rolling hills, prairie and great vistas. There will be some stops along the way to talk about some of the unique changes happening during this season of preparation. It's suggested participants bring a water bottle, a snack, a camera and binoculars. Some cameras will be available on loan. (1-320-239-2860)

Hike the falls

Gooseberry Falls State Park, 11 a.m.-noon Sunday

A hike around the falls will include descending stairs on the walk. Meet at the art column by the visitor center. (1-218-595-7100, mndnr.gov)

Raptors in the yard

Lowry Nature Center, 2-4 p.m. Sunday

Meet captive raptors and learn about these amazing birds of prey. Cameras welcome. Drop in anytime. This program is free and open to all ages. (threeriversparks.org)

Rolling at night

Elm Creek Park Reserve, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. Wednesday

Twist and turn on mountain bikes through 10.5 miles of singletrack trail. Bike lights are required. Race day registration begins at 5:30 p.m. The race start is at 6:30 p.m. Must be 14 years or older to participate. Call 763-559-6700 to pre-register and reference activity #422282-00. Helping prairies

Crow-Hassan Park Reserve, 10:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. Tuesday

Head to the reserve in Rogers and help restore the prairie by collecting native wildflower seed. Volunteers increase the amount and diversity of seed planted annually in more than 1,200 acres of restored prairie managed by the Three Rivers Parks District. Learn about the prairie's rich history and how to identify many of the plants. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, or accompanied by a responsible adult.
