Regarding the April 23 editorial cartoon.

On Sunday, the Star Tribune published a cartoon, "It's a bit noisy in Minneapolis," which intended to support the recent decision by the Minneapolis City Council to allow expanded use of the Muslim call to prayer. That was a decision that our Editorial Board already had spoken out in favor of, but the cartoon was perceived by many to have missed the mark. In listening to our readers and community members in the last few days, including many in the Muslim community, I agree that the cartoon didn't achieve its goal but instead brought pain to readers and communities who felt targeted and mischaracterized. I'm sorry that the Star Tribune published it. We will work harder to do better as an organization to ensure we're holding ourselves and our community accountable in constructive ways that speak to our values of respect and integrity.
