Science fiction writer Joel Rosenberg was a well-known figure in the Twin Cities. Author of more than 20 books of science fiction and fantasy, he was also a passionate advocate for self-defense, including the right to carry a gun.
He showed up in the pages of the Star Tribune on occasion--on the local best-seller list, or quoted in stories, or, sometimes, as the subject of a story--such as in December, when he was arrested for bringing a handgun into City Hall for a meeting with the police chief's spokesman.
Rosenberg collapsed and died in early June of a heart attack at age 56. He left a widow and two daughters, the younger one still in high school.
Friends are planning a memorial service and a fund-raiser for later this month.
The wake will be at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 26, at the Doubletree Hotel, 1500 Park Place Blvd, Mpls.
The fundraiser will be a few days later--at 7 p.m. June 28 at DreamHaven Books, 2301 E. 38th St., Mpls. There will be music--John Sjogren of The Tim Malloys, and Scott Keever of Orkestar Bez Ime, and Steven Brust of Cats Laughing, and Nate Bucklin, and others.
Money raised will go to help his wife and children.
