Girl, 15, shot to death near Lake of the Isles ID'd; shooter yet to be located

A 15-year-old girl was shot to death early Monday east of Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis, officials said.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office identified the girl Monday afternoon as Ka'Maih Emauri Johnson of Minneapolis. She died of a gunshot wound to the chest, according to the medical examiner's statement.

Johnson was shot multiple times in the chest and then dumped nearby from a vehicle, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.

The shooting occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m. near the residential intersection of 25½ Street W. and S. Girard Avenue, police said.

Emergency medical responders tended to the teen's injuries but she died at the scene, according to police. No arrests had been made as of Monday evening.

"Circumstances surrounding the incident are unknown at this time," a police statement read. "Officers interviewed witnesses and canvassed the area."

About a dozen people gathered for a memorial Monday afternoon on 25½ Street W. Some held pink and purple balloons. One of the attendees said Johnson's mother and grandmother were among the mourners. .

Those at the memorial declined to comment on Johnson's death or the shooting circumstances.

Kay Thomas, 78, who lives around the corner on Humboldt Avenue, said she did not hear the gunshots but it was unsettling to know a fatal shooting occurred just outside her house.

"It makes me sad; it's never happened here before," she said.

This was Minneapolis' 36th homicide so far in 2023, according to the Star Tribune's database.
