Gophers hammer thrower Kostas Zaltos places third in NCAA track and field meet

Redshirt freshman Kostas Zaltos of the Gophers placed third in the hammer throw on the first day of the NCAA track and field meet in Eugene, Ore. Zaltos, of Greece, threw a career-best 233 feet, 7 inches.

Zaltos was the Big Ten meet champion in the hammer throw and was second in the event at the West Preliminary meet in late May.

Florida senior Thomas Mardal's winning throw was 251-9. Junior Alex Talley of North Dakota State placed sixth (232-11). Talley is from West Fargo.

NAHL Showcase set

The North American Hockey League said its annual NAHL Showcase will take place Sept. 15-18, 2021 at the Super Rink in Blaine.

All 29 NAHL teams will play four regular-season games at the showcase. The event attracts more than 9,000 fans, including 330-plus pro, college and junior scouts.

To date, 334 NAHL players have made NCAA commitments during the 2020-21 season, 280 to Division I colleges.

Claudia Pilot dropped a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole to lift her and her partner, Brenda Williams, to a one-stroke victory at the 2021 Minnesota Golf Association Women's Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championship on Tuesday at Burl Oaks Golf Club in Minnetrista. This is the fourth time Pilot of Windsong Farm and Williams of Grand View Lodge have won the tournament.

• Senior outfielder Joey Werner of Minnesota State Mankato was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association's NCAA Division II All-America first team, sophomore outfielder Carter Howell of Augustana to the second team and junior catcher Will Olson of Augustana to the third team.
