Gophers men's basketball faces Northwestern in regular-season finale
The Gophers might need to win to avoid a last-place finish.
Preview: The Gophers (13-15, 4-15 Big Ten) will know when they take the floor at Northwestern if they need a victory to avoid finishing last in the Big Ten. Nebraska was only one victory behind in the standings with a game at first-place Wisconsin earlier Sunday; the Cornhuskers have the tiebreaker over the Gophers after beating them in Lincoln. The Wildcats (13-15, 6-13) were the last opponent to lose to Minnesota, 77-60 on Jan. 19 at Williams Arena. After three consecutive victories, Northwestern has lost five of six entering Sunday's senior night.
Players to watch: Senior big man Eric Curry missed Wednesday's 84-73 loss at Maryland with an upper-body injury. Senior Charlie Daniels replaced Curry in the starting lineup for the fourth time this season but tweaked his ankle against the Terrapins. Wildcats forward Pete Nance had 38 points combined in games against Minnesota and Nebraska, but he was then held to just 16 total points in the last two losses to Iowa and Penn State.
Numbers: The Gophers are trying to avoid finishing Big Ten play with only four victories, which would be the program's fewest in a season since going 4-14 in 2017-18 under Richard Pitino.
Gopher basketball coach Ben Johnson signed three recruits who have similarities with the program’s last two impact freshmen, Isaac Asuma and Cam Christie.
