The Gophers and Spartans are both coming off near-upsets of top-25 teams that fell short in the final minutes.

Gophers update: The Gophers (10-13, 3-8 Big Ten) is coming off a 10-point loss at fifth-ranked Indiana. The Gophers led by four points with 4:42 left on Sara Scalia's jumper, but the Hoosiers finished the game on a 14-0 run. It was much the same situation in the Gophers' 74-71 loss at Michigan State Jan. 23, where the score was tied 67-67 with just over a minute left. Down two, out of a time out, Scalia — who scored 31 points in the game — couldn't get a tying shot to fall with 13 seconds left. ... Scalia has been the brightest spot of the Gophers season. She has scored in double figures in 13 consecutive games, averaging 19.7 points and shooting 45.2% on three-pointers in that time. She is 11th in the Big Ten in scoring (16.5), eighth in three-point percentage (42.0) and second in threes made per game (3.2). ... F Laura Bagwell-Katalinich has scored a season-high 10 points off the bench in consecutive games. G Deja Winters, who is averaging 11.4 points per game, had 17 vs. Michigan State Jan. 23.

Michigan State update: The Spartans had their four-game winning streak ended vs. No. 17 Maryland on Thursday, 67-62 in a game in which they were within two points with 48 seconds left. Michigan State (12-9, 6-4) is tied for sixth in the conference. ... The Spartans are led by G Nia Clouden, who is third in the Big Ten in scoring (21.0). Clouden scored 14 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter vs. the Gophers Jan. 23, including all eight in an 8-1 run to start the fourth quarter that put Michigan up five. She is fifth in the Big Ten in three-point shooting (42.6%) and Matilda Ekh is seventh (42.1). Clouden (25) and Ekh (23) combined for 48 of Michigan State's 74 points in that game.
