A trip for Kadyn Betts to Minnesota in the spring set the course for his basketball future.
The 6-8, 210-pound Colorado native arrived in the Twin Cities to visit the Gophers and play in a local AAU tournament. He left with a scholarship offer from Ben Johnson and a memorable performance in front of Minnesota basketball fans.
His 23-point effort against D1 Minnesota in May showed just how much progress he was making this year. Looking back, Betts was excited to play here and find the college program where he eventually saw the best fit.
"It was an amazing feeling," Betts said after his commitment to the Gophers last week to start their 2023 recruiting class. "With what they're doing with the program [in the Big Ten] and what they envision, it's amazing to be a part of that."
Playing for the Pluto Prospects AAU team out of Colorado Springs this year, Betts has been one of the fastest rising seniors in the country. He went from relatively unknown to as high as 87th in the 2023 class by PrepHoops.com this spring.
Betts, who averaged 22.7 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 3.6 blocks last season at Pueblo Central, is transferring to Huntington Prep in West Virginia.
After having a handful of lower Division I offers as a junior, the highly-skilled rocky mountain talent eventually jumped onto the radar of dozens of high major schools this AAU season. He visited both Minnesota and Nebraska.
Betts will play in front of the Gophers this week in the Prep Hoops Live event in Atlanta. In a Q&A with the Star Tribune recently, he talked how he fits with the U and his motivation to prove he's one of the top players in the 2023 class.
