• The No. 3 Gophers volleyball team (14-2, 6-1 Big Ten) plays at No. 14 Michigan State (15-4, 4-3) at 7 p.m. Saturday. Minnesota is coming off a 3-0 road sweep of No. 1 Wisconsin on Wednesday. The Gophers are tied for second place in the conference.
• The Gophers men's cross-country team placed 22nd in the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in Madison. Obsa Ali was Minnesota's top individual, finishing 48th by covering the 8K course in 24:35.5. The Gophers women took 16th, led by freshman Megan Hasz. She was 28th in the 6K race in 20:44.
• The Minnesota Section PGA announced its 2016 award winners. Among them: Pro of the Year — Steve Whillock, director of golf at Oak Marsh Golf Club in Oakdale; Teacher of the Year — Kris Kroetsch, Fargo (N.D.) Country Club, and the Youth Development Award — Dean Zahn, Moccasin Creek Country Club in Aberdeen, S.D. They will be honored Oct. 24 at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids.
• Kaylee Burmeister had 21 kills and hit .409 as No. 3 Southwest Minnesota State rallied to beat No. 2 Concordia (St. Paul) 22-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-18, 15-10.
