Gophers routed by No. 1 Penn State in wrestling

Undefeated and top-ranked Penn State crushed the No. 14 Gophers 35-8 on Friday night in Big Ten wrestling at State College, Pa.

Minnesota got its two wins at the lightest weights. No. 6-ranked Ethan Lizak beat Devin Schnupp 16-0 for a technical fall at 125 pounds, and Mitch McKee defeated Corey Keener 15-8 at 133.

The Nittany Lions (10-0, 6-0 Big Ten), who won their sixth NCAA team title last March in seven years, took a 25-0 lead in the first six matches. Penn State got a major decision in the opening match at 157 and pins at 184 and 197.

Minnesota (7-5, 2-2) lost two close matches. No. 7 Nick Wanzek lost 3-1 to No. 1 Vincenzo Joseph at 165, and Rylee Streifel fell 2-0 to No. 6 Nick Nevills at heavyweight.

Sophomore Mark Hall, a former Apple Valley star, also won for Penn State. The No. 2-ranked Hall beat the Gophers' Chris Pfarr 10-3 at 174.

Dave Lundeen, one of four brothers from Minneapolis who played hockey for the Wisconsin Badgers in the 1970s, died Thursday at age 63 at his McFarland, Wis., home. He had esophageal cancer.

Lundeen, who played for Minneapolis Southwest High School, was a senior on the Badgers' 1977 NCAA championship team. He had 60 goals and 81 assists in 141 games at Wisconsin.

• Senior Karlie Place of the host Gophers women's track and field team won the pole vault in the Jack Johnson Classic, clearing 14 feet, ½ inch. That height is third best all-time in program history. She is a first-year transfer from Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

• St. Thomas junior center Hannah Spaulding was named to D3hoops.com's team of the week. She averaged 23.5 points, 10 rebounds and 3.5 blocks in wins over Bethel and St. Benedict's. Into this weekend, her 71.1 percent field goal percentage is the best in all three women's basketball divisions.

• Hamline forward Darby Dodds was named to D3hockey.com's women's hockey team of the week. She had two goals and six points in an 8-1 in over St. Olaf last week and her 33 total points are second among Division III players.

• Perfect Game named three Gophers to its preseason Big Ten all-conference baseball team: catcher Cole McDevitt, first baseman Toby Hanson and third baseman Micah Coffey. It also predicted pitcher/infielder Max Meyer of Woodbury High School would be the freshman of the year and that Minnesota would finish sixth.
