Gophers softball team rallies for extra-inning victory over California

The Gophers softball team rallied to a 7-6 win over California in eight innings at the Littlewood Classic on Sunday in Tempe, Ariz. Minnesota scored four times in the sixth inning to overcome a two-run deficit. Kayla Chavez had the game-winning RBI single as the Gophers won their fourth straight game.

Late Saturday night, the Gophers defeated No. 21 Arizona State 7-5. Senior righthander Autumn Pease threw a career-high 153 pitches in the complete-game win; she allowed only two earned runs on eight hits, struck out eight and walked four.

Sydney Strelow and Megan Dray hit solo homers in the second and seventh innings, respectively, for Minnesota — it was Dray's third long ball of the day in two games. Natalie DenHartog saved a run or two in the fifth inning when she caught a ball while crashing into the center field wall with two runners aboard.

U baseball loses

The Gophers baseball team dropped its second straight game to Florida Atlanta, falling 13-4 in Boca Raton, Fla.

Andrew Wilhite went 2-for-5 with a home run, double and two RBI for Minnesota. The teams finish the four-game series at 5:30 p.m. Monday

Whitecaps lose

Theresa Knutson had a hat trick, and Kristen Barbara and Madison Packer each had a goal and an assist as the Metropolitan Riveters beat the Minnesota Whitecaps 7-4 in a Premier Hockey Federation game.

Haley Mack had a goal and an assist for the Whitecaps.

  • The St. Catherine women's swimming and diving team won the MIAC meet on Saturday night at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center with 809 points. Gustavus placed second with 714. Wildcats senior Jordyn Wentzel broke her own NCAA Division III record in 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2 minutes, 10.66 seconds in finals.
    • Gustavus Adolphus scored 1,030 points over the four-day conference meet to win its 24th men's title. In second place was St. John's with 731. Sophomore Matt Strom led the Gusties by winning the 200, 500 and 1,650 freestyle and anchoring the first-place 800 freestyle relay.
