Gophers swimmer Max McHugh finishes seventh in 100 breaststroke at Olympic trials

Gophers senior Max McHugh tied for seventh place Monday in the men's 100-meter breaststroke, one of the most exciting races of the night. The top three — Michael Andrew, Andrew Wilson and Nic Fink — were separated by 0.07 of a second, with Andrew beating Wilson by 0.01 in a time of 58.73.

McHugh was in third place at the turn. He faded over the final meters, finishing in 1:00.56 to tie Ben Cono. McHugh will compete again Wednesday in the preliminaries of the 200 breaststroke.

Olivia Anderson of Edina, a member of the Aquajets Swim Team who swam in college at Texas, swam the 13th-fastest time in the preliminaries of the women's 100 breaststroke to reach the semifinals. She finished 12th in 1:08.23.

Other swimmers with Minnesota connections who competed Monday include Gophers alumnae Tevyn Waddell (21st, 100 back) and Lindsey Kozelsky (33rd, 100 breaststroke), and current Gopher Abbey Kilgallon (46th, 400 free).

• Katie Ledecky earned a trip to her third Olympics with a victory in the 400 freestyle. She was five body lengths ahead of runner-up Paige Madden, touching in 4 minutes, 1.27 seconds.

• Teenager Torri Huske captured the women's 100 butterfly, finishing in 55.66 seconds, breaking the national record of 55.78 that she set Sunday.
