Gophers volleyball ends losing streak with victory at Ohio State

The Gophers have won their past seven matches against the Buckeyes in Columbus.

Mckenna Wucherer had 16 kills and 10 digs, Taylor Landfair added 14 kills and 11 digs and the Gophers volleyball team defeated Ohio State 25-21, 14-25, 25-22, 25-18 on Friday in Columbus, Ohio.

Landfair passed 1,000 career kills with her fifth kill of the match as the Gophers (11-10, 7-6 Big Ten) ended a two-match losing streak and climbed back over .500 with their seventh consecutive road victory at Ohio State. They trailed 13-8 in the third set and 7-2 in the fourth but came back to win both.

Lydia Grote added six kills, while Kylie Murr had 17 digs and Phoebe Awoleye seven blocks. Melani Shaffmaster had 31 assists, 10 digs and five blocks as the Gophers hit .195 to the Buckeyes' .133.

Emily Londot had 18 kills to lead Ohio State (8-14, 5-8).

The Gophers play their fourth consecutive road match Sunday at Northwestern before returning home next weekend to face Purdue and Indiana.

Lucas Wahlin scored a tiebreaking shorthanded goal, his second goal of the night, as the host St. Thomas men's hockey team beat Northern Michigan 4-2. Wahlin scored unassisted at 4:44 of the third period to put the Tommies ahead for good.

• The Gophers men's and women's swimming and diving teams each suffered losses in their dual meet at home, with the 24th-ranked women's team losing 181-119 to No. 12-ranked Wisconsin, while the men fell to the No. 22 Badgers 178-120.

• Third-ranked Northwestern (Roseville) earned its 26th UMAC volleyball regular-season championship by sweeping host Minnesota Morris. The Eagles have won the regular-season championship in 13 consecutive seasons and in 16 of 17.
