FILE - In this Nov. 19, 2016, file photo, Maryland quarterback Max Bortenschlager (18) throws during the second half of an NCAA college football game against Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb. Bortenschlager will make his second career start in place of Kasim Hill when the Terrapins visit Minnesota Saturday in the Big Ten opener for both teams. Coach DJ Durkin said Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017, that Hill will miss the rest of the season with a torn right anterior cruciate ligament suffered in Saturdayís
With Options No. 1 and No. 2 hurt, Maryland turns to Max Bortenschlager for Saturday’s game vs. the Gophers. The third-string quarterback had a rough day last Saturday, throwing two interceptions, including a pick-six. (AP photo by Nati Harnik) (The Minnesota Star Tribune)

Armed, but not dangerous

With a possible exception or two depending on development, the opposing quarterbacks on the Gophers schedule are either unproven or unsuccessful or both. The Big Ten's two leading QBs, Penn State's Trace McSorley and Ohio State's J.T. Barrett, are not on their schedule. A look at who is:

Aug. 31, W 17-7 vs. Buffalo: Tyree Jackson

⊲ Missed on 20 attempts vs. Minnesota, and threw a costly INT. Backup QB led Buffalo to victory last Saturday.

Sept. 9, W 48-14 at Oregon State: Jake Luton

⊲ Had a QB rating of 40.2 vs. Gophers, throwing for just 135 yards.

Sept. 16, W, 34-3 vs. Middle Tenn.: John Urzua

⊲ Subbing for injured Brent Stockstill, Urzua threw two picks and was replaced in 4th quarter.

Sept. 30 vs. Maryland: Max Bortenschlager

⊲ Third-stringer (starter, backup injured) threw two interceptions, including a pick-six, last week.

Oct. 7 at Purdue: David Blough

⊲ Junior had rough game in loss to Michigan (5 of 13, 32 yards) and is fighting a shoulder injury.

Oct. 14 vs. Michigan St.: Brian Lewerke

⊲ First-year starter missed on 20 throws in loss to Notre Dame but has been effective in other games.

Oct. 21 vs. Illinois: Jeff George Jr.

⊲ QB carousel stopped on son of former Viking, who struggled (12 of 22, 2 INTs) in loss to South Florida.

Oct. 28 at Iowa: Nate Stanley

⊲ First-year starter leads Big Ten with 12 TDs and hasn't made many mistakes. Two TDs, no INTs vs. Penn State last Saturday.

Nov. 4 at Michigan: John O'Korn

⊲ Stater Wilton Speight is hurt; senior O'Korn had a quality, if unspectacular, start in win vs. Purdue.

Nov. 11 vs. Nebraska: Tanner Lee

⊲ His 9 INTs lead the nation. All have come in past three games (two Ls), and three were pick-six's. Disastrous.

Nov. 18 at Northwestern: Clayton Thorson

⊲ Finally showed signs of his dynamic 2016 season last weekend, going 23 of 30 for 370 yards vs. Bowling Green.

Nov. 25 vs. Wisconsin: Alex Hornibrook

⊲ Sophomore was dang near perfect vs. BYU: 18 of 19, 256 yards, 4 TDs. Maybe the best of this bunch so far.
