Grand Rapids tops Minnetonka

Junior Gavin Hain scored on a breakaway 11 seconds into overtime to lift Grand Rapids to a 3-2 boys' hockey victory over Minnetonka on Friday at the Pagel Activity Center in Minnetonka.

The Thunderhawks, ranked No. 3 in Class 2A in the latest state coaches poll, rallied from a one-goal deficit to start the third period when Hain, who has committed to play at North Dakota, corralled a loose puck in the slot and beat goaltender Matt Muller to tie the score 2-2 just 25 seconds into the period.

Benilde-St. Margaret's 4, Duluth Marshall 3 (OT): Peter Moran poked a loose puck into the net for his second goal of the game to lift the Class 2A, No. 20 Knights past the visiting Hilltoppers.

Coming Saturday: basketball

Some of Minnesota's top high school basketball talent, including the top-ranked boys' teams in three classes, will compete Saturday in 13th annual Breakdown Sports Tip-Off Classic at Hopkins High School's Lindbergh Center.

Class 1A, No. 1 Minneapolis North plays Apple Valley, ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. In other boys' games, Class 4A, No. 1 Champlin Park plays No. 6 Rochester John Marshall at 5:30 p.m. Top-ranked DeLaSalle in Class 3A plays Des Moines (Iowa) Hoover at 7 p.m.

The event, which also includes games on Dec. 10, also features two preseason No. 1 girls' teams. Hopkins, top-ranked in Class 4A, plays Kasson-Mantorville at 2:15 p.m., and Goodhue, top-ranked in Class 1A, plays Mountain Iron-Buhl at noon. Matchups of ranked Class 4A girls' teams include No. 6 St. Michael-Albertville vs. No. 7 Apple Valley at 6:30 p.m. and No. 2 Eastview vs. No. 9 Minnetonka at 8 p.m.
