Groundbreaking today on upscale kennel at MSP

The Animal Humane Society is poised to break ground today on construction of a pet boarding facility at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

Travelers' Fidos and Fluffies will be pampered with suites, a spa, day care, heated floors and a grooming area complete with a therapy pool.

The rate should be about $25 a day.

Most suites will measure 4 by 6 feet. Pets will be taken for occasional walks.

The $4.25 million facility, scheduled to open later this year, will be run by the Humane Society in partnership with the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC).

They are refurbishing a 12,000-square-foot building just off Hwy. 62 at 28th Avenue S. and adding another 10,800 square feet. The enhanced facility will be able to board 96 dogs, 30 cats and 15 smaller animals.

It will be run like any other kennel or boarding facility, with one exception: It will be open and staffed 24 hours a day.

The operators also said they'll gladly accept pets from nontravelers as well.

Similar operations are at airports in Denver, San Diego, Florida and New Orleans.
