The Edina players are in charge
After so much success as Edina’s head coach, Curt Giles knows a little about how to properly manage his team.
The key to keeping them focused, to minimize distractions heading into Saturday’s Class 2A championship game, is to leave it in the hands of his most trusted players, he said.
“What you do is have seniors like this,” he said, nodding at Jackson Nevers and Bobby Cowan, seated to his right on the interview podium. “They control the locker room, the tempo of the locker room. They’re the voice in the locker room.”
The reason, Giles said, is that the players spend more time together than with the coaches. Players have a better gauge of where the team is mentally.
“We can only do so much, and we’re not in there all the time,” Giles said. “We have good leadership.”

Nanne gets noticed
A picture of Lou Nanne, the former Gophers and Minnesota North Stars legend and patriarch of a hockey family with deep ties to Edina, was shown on the overhead videoboard at the Xcel Energy Center during Edina’s semifinal. He received an ovation from the crowd. Nanne is stepping away from his traditional role as the color commentator for state tournament television broadcasts after the tournament ends.
