How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Monday

The stock market closed slightly lower in light Monday trading as investors looked ahead to a busy week for company earnings. JPMorgan Chase, Johnson & Johnson, and Wells Fargo are among the big names turning in quarterly results Tuesday as earnings season gets underway.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 80.61 points, or 0.5 percent, to close at 17,977.04.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped 9.63 points, or 0.5 percent, to 2,092.43

The Nasdaq lost 7.73 points, or 0.2 percent, to 4,988.25.

For the year:

The Dow is up 153.97 points, or 0.9 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 33.53 points, or 1.6 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 252.19 points, or 5.3 percent.
