U.S. stocks ended a see-saw day slightly lower Thursday, the fourth loss in a row. Edgy investors continue to monitor the conflict in Yemen and the rapid ascension of the U.S. dollar, which is causing some companies to pull back their profit expectations for the year.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 40.31 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,678.23.

The S&P 500 index fell 4.90 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,056.15.

The Nasdaq composite fell 13.16 points, or 0.3 percent, to 4,863.36.

For the week:

The Dow is down 449.42 points, or 2.5 percent.

The S&P 500 index is down 51.95 points, or 2.5 percent.
