INTERACTIVE: Estimating the impact of cutting in the U.S.

A recent national study estimated there are more than half a million women and girls in the United States who have experienced female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) or might be at some risk of undergoing the procedure. Minnesota and Minneapolis-St. Paul came in third among states and metro areas with the highest numbers of such residents. Critics of the study argue that thanks to legal and other restrictions, the risk girls in U.S. immigrant communities face is relatively small.
