GULLANE, Scotland — A glance at the key hole Thursday in the British Open:

HOLE: No. 1

YARDAGE: 447

PAR: 4

STROKE AVERAGE: 4.56

RANK: 1st

KEY FACT: If players didn't know the opening hole at Muirfield would be tough they found out when Lloyd Saltman — playing in the first group — hit two tee shots out of bounds before making an 8. Tiger Woods nearly hit one out himself and had to take an unplayable in opening with a bogey.
