Stanford freshman Regan Smith won the 200-yard backstroke and finished second in the 200 butterfly and as a member of the 400 freestyle relay Saturday at the NCAA women's swimming and diving championships in Atlanta.
It was the first NCAA title in an individual event for Smith, of Lakeville, who finished her first NCAA championship meet with top-three finishes in six events.
Smith swam a pool-record time of 1 minute, 47.76 seconds in the 200 back, surging over the final 50 yards to beat Wisconsin's Phoebe Bacon. In the 200 fly, Smith rallied from eighth place at the final turn to finish in a dead heat for second place with Olivia Carter of Michigan in a time of 1:51.19, .40 of a second behind winner Alex Walsh of Virginia.
A three-time medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, Smith also was part of Stanford's winning 800 free relay and was third in the 100 back and 400 medley relay. Stanford finished third behind Virginia and Texas in the team standings.
