Richard Carter McComb, the former CEO of Life Link III who faced six felony counts in Hennepin County District Court for failure to pay his taxes, apparently killed himself Oct. 20 in Marathon, Fla.

McComb, 64, was arrested in June at the nonprofit medical consortium's Minneapolis offices and charged with six felony tax charges and released on $250,000 bail.

Becky Herrin, spokeswoman for the Monroe County Sheriff in Key West, Fla., said Wednesday that the agency received a call at 6:15 a.m. Oct. 20 from a man who said he was going to kill himself. He gave a general location of where his body could be found, and deputies were dispatched.

McComb's body was found at the end of the road next to some dumpsters, Herrin said. Incident reports say the deputies found a 9mm Walther handgun on the ground between his body and left arm. She said there was no sign of foul play. The reports said nothing about next of kin, she added.

McComb allegedly hadn't filed a Minnesota tax return since 2002 and substantially underreported the income he was paid by Life Link III on federal tax returns for the years 2007 to 2009.

McComb had a Florida driver's license and rented an apartment on Coco Plum Drive in Marathon, according to public records. But he also had two vehicles registered in Minnesota at an address in Excelsior, and he has a post office box in Minneapolis.

Life Link III, which operates ground and air transportation services for area hospitals, said in a statement in June that McComb had been a consultant and was acting as interim CEO. It said the investigation concerns McComb and some other business entities in which he has a financial interest.

"The investigation is not about Life Link III, and Carter McComb has no financial interest in Life Link III," the company said after the arrest.
